After a week of hard work and frantic calls, guess who has two thumbs and a mentor interview scheduled? That's right, this guy! I started off this week extremely nervous to begin calling potential mentors, but with the encouragement of my peers I gained the confidence necessary to get on the phone. I'm giving credit where credit is due; without the help of my classmates, I most likely wouldn't have my first mentor visit scheduled, and I'm highly grateful for the new friendships that I am making through ISM.
During my first call, I was expecting to talk to a human being right away and not an automated voice, but for the first ten minutes, I navigated my way through complicated phone instructions to reach the office number of the doctor I was contacting. Finally, I got through, only to be sent to voicemail. I grew continuously more flustered and frustrated as for the next five to six calls I seemed to be talking to a programmed person each time. And now, I've decided my final product for this year will be to improve the call systems of all local orthopedic centers in the local Texas area.
However, I did have a stroke of luck in that the first person that picked up was the one that scheduled an interview for me. I introduced myself and my topic of study, and I was finally successful in setting up my first interview. All of these calls happened in one class period, but it was definitely worth it because I was one of the first students in ISM with a set interview.
As this coming week approaches, I am anxious to get my first interview done, but at the same time am worried that I will not know what to say or will fumble my words. The interview process will definitely be tedious, but I am up for the task. I will continue to work hard to flourish in ISM, and will try to get myself prepared for this interview to the best of my ability.
